The Day I Danced On Stage At A Smallpools Concert

Smallpools; not to be confused with large hotubs. This indie rock band is taking America by storm with its’ upbeat music full of contagious rhythm.

I was lucky enough to see then at their Richmond show on December 7. Finals week was approaching, but I knew from the moment I won those tickets I would be apart of a wild experience. The venue was only for those 21 and older, but that did not stop my friend and I from getting into this show.

There I stood, right in front of the lead singer as he tuned his guitar. I repeatedly told my friend to pinch me because I had to have been Dreaming. Yes, Dreaming is their hit song, hence the play on words.

With only four songs to play, Smallpools brought this private party to a whole new level. For only being known less than a year, fans were jumping and singing along to the music. The members even acknowledged how humbled they were by the fact fans even knew the lyrics.

Halfway through the show, I asked the lead singer if they ever let fans come up on stage with them to play. His responded, “Not usually, but would you like to come up to play Dreaming with us?” I was in shock, I could not believe I was even talking to them let alone being told I could participate in their hit song. I WAS ECSTATIC to say the least.

They covered New Radical’s “You Get What You Give”, and the execution was beyond perfect. It had to have been one of the best covers I ever heard a live band perform. I mean, come on, who does not love singing the lyrics, “Don’t let go, You’ve got the music in you, One dance left, This world is gonna pull through, Don’t give up, You’ve got a reason to live.”

The energy was through the roof and they still had Dreaming to play. After they tested my tambourine skills, Smallpools brought me onstage to shake what my mama gave me. There I was jumping up and down, singing along with Smallpools, and loving every moment of it. The ‘feeling like a rock star’ vibe was definitely hitting me at this time.

It really just shows how the men of Smallpools are down to Earth. They made a fan’s life by letting her sing on stage with them, and then continued to meet every fan after their show. It was an incredible show, one for the books. The countdown until their show with Grouplove in March begins!
